Feminist Theory - bell hooks
what is the feminist theory?
The struggle to end patriarchal oppression
women are objectified and exploited in the media
females have a low status in media representation
what can this be applied to?
tide
advert was made after the second world war which suggests men were returning to their 'masculine' jobs and women were in the domestic role
only women are shown in the advert, this suggests the use of domestic products such as tide is a women's job rather than men.
formation
'black girl feminism'
music video and song suggests women are powerful
throughout the video, the majority of the people shot are female.
females are dressed in tight, semi-revealing clothing, showing they can still be objectified and also linking to the male gaze.
kiss of the vampire
men were see as the victims.
'helpless' pose and weak stance, being held by the woman
the women in the poster have a more aggressive expression and tough stance, suggesting they are the villains in the film
however they are still sexualised in this poster by their clothing, it is tight and semi-revealing
humans
synths were often female and are skilled in every domestic task, offering to cook the food all day and putting away the clothes etc.
synth's are used for sexual pleasure e.g niska
joe couldn't keep up with the domestic work in the house and needed a synth as a helping hand
suggests that he is not domestically gifted
evaluation of the theory
women are taught to be housewives and nurturing through the media, which can be shown in some domestic product adverts and baby products adverts
women are often shown as weak and vulnerable in the media, needing a man to fix their problems and act as a saviour.
there are still underlying messages portraying very outdated stereotypes and views towards genders
