PASSIVE
WHEN TO USE PASSIVE VOICE
You are talking about a general truth
You want to emphasize the person or thing acted on
You are writing in a scientific genre that traditionally relies on passive voice, it is often preferred in lab reports and scientific research papers
The person who does the action is unknown, unimportant or obvious.
E.G: The beach clean-up day is held every summer. (= by the organisers, it is obvious)
the action is more important than the person who does it.
E.G : The paintings are displayed in the main hall. (It’s not important who put them on display.)
The main verb is always in its past participle form.
CARACTERISTICS
The main verb is always in its past participle form.
Passive voice is always constructed with a conjugated form of to be plus the verb’s past participle.
The passive sentence consists of object+a form of to be plus the past participle+preposition +subject
ACTIVE
Active voice is used to indicate the grammatical subject of the verb is performing the action or causing the happening denoted by the verb.
Sentences in the active voice have a strong, direct, and clear tone.
Basic active voice construction is : subject, verb, and object.
CHANGING THE ACTIVE TO PASSIVE VOICE
The active verb changes into a passive form (to be + past participle of main verb)
The subject of the active sentence becomes the agent.
The object of the active sentence becomes the subject in the passive sentence
The agent is introduced with "by" (person) or "with" (instrument, material, ingredient) or it is omitted because it is unimportant or easily understood.
