Reasons not to joined the EU: memory of powerful empire who played an international role during the WWII and special relationship with the US.
After 3 attemps with VETO of French Government (C. de Gaulle), Edward Health in 1973 succeded in joining the EU but with constant special conditions.

2004-07. Expansion of the EU with communists countries: Poland, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria.
2016-19. Theresa May. She started the process to leave but the EU rejected several times this proposal.
2015. D. Cameron. Referendum to leave or not the EU. 52% voted to leave, called BREXIT. After that, Cameron resigned.
2019. July onwards. Boris Johnson. Determined position in front of House of Commons. Parliamentary majority for a deal. He succeded.
2009. Lisbon Treaty.** EU was founded** and changed the legal structure and allowed signing international agreements at Community level.
Serious Crisis. Huge debt to US + other countries after war. No control British colonists (claimed self-government)
Labour party ruled by Clement Attley. Created Common-wealth of Nations and created Social Welfare State (National Health Service) Free Medical Care for everyone.
1947. Marschal Plan. US. To help Europe to economy recovery. West Block accepted due to Soviet Union threats.

1957. Treatry of Rome by EEC (European Economic Community). Great Britain refused to join. They want to get in later due to weakening of economy and unemployment.
