Magnetic seperation

The method of operating unwanted components from a mixture using a sieve.

Usually for solid components

this is where the solid components settle down under the force of gravity while the liquid is still at the top.

Preferred when there are different sized components.

Solid component at the bottom is known as the sediment

Evaporation

the liquid over the sediment is know as the supernatant

This where the supernatant is poured out without disturbing the sediment at the bottom.

The method of operating insoluble solid components suspended in a liquid using a filter like a sieve, strainer or filter paperis called filtration

Liquid that pases brought the filter is called the filtrate

Insoluble component which remains on the top is called residue

The process of changing a substance from its liquid to gaseous state is called evaporation.

Heating increases the rate of evaporation

can be used to obtain the solid component from a homogenous mixture.

The method of separating magnetic components of a mixture from non magnetic ones using a magnet.

Separating iron filings from beads can be separated by a magnet.

The process of separating heavier and lighter components of a mixture by wind or by blowing air

This can be used to separate chaff from grains

Beads and stone

Tea is separated by the process of filtration

water and salt can be separated by this process.
