We think that Anja connects to this theme because of the struggle that she went through. On top of the holocaust which was like hell for the jews, she was pregnant. She was separated from her family and Vladek which made it even more difficult for her to keep hope. She felt like she had no purpose to live after losing most of her family and she fell victim to post pregnancy depression. Furthermore, she didn't just lose her parents and siblings, she lost her child. Anja had lost access to her prescription which was the last straw. In conclusion, the war effected her drastically which led to a series of events where she eventually ended her life without considering what a heavy toll this would take on her 2nd child Artie and her beloved husband Vladek
