Communication methods & interpersonal skills
Verbal communication
1-1 meetings with staff and parents e.g. Parents evening,
Conversations with a group e.g. staff meeting.
Presentations and speeches- I have given presentations when I have led staff meetings / training.
Non-verbal communication
Gestures- I use hand gestures when speaking to the class.
Facial expressions- I use gestures when being animated while sharing a story with the class.
Paralanguage- I change my tone of voice when speaking to a child.
Written communication
Emails - I have used email to communicate with additional supports outside of school as well as to communicate with staff and parents.
Newsletters- We send newsletters as a school with information for parents and a class page and information about the work we have been covering.
Social media- I have celebrated children's work and shared things we have achieved on Twitter.
Instant messaging- I use Seesaw to instant message parents and keep them informed and up to date.
Visual
Images- I share images of the children's work on Seesaw.
Graphics- I have created graphics to share with parents / staff e.g. for a class workout challenge in lockdown to inspire the children to exercise at home.
Videos- I created 'How to guides' for parents using video through screen castify in lockdown. I also video recorded lessons during lockdown for my class.
Time management skills- This is vital for organising and keeping on top of tasks. I organised my time during lockdown for online lessons, planning and resourcing lessons, meetings, contacting parents and creating videos.
Listening skills- Making children feel valued and listened to is very important. Listening to children in my class to understand their needs and concerns.
Verbal interpersonal skills- Listening and questioning skills are imperative in the classroom. You need to be able to read the room and adapt to different situations. I use listening and questioning skills when delivering lessons and when speaking with parents.
Problem solving skills- Good problem solving skills are essential in teaching. At the start of lockdown some children didn't have digital devices to use at home. Before the Welsh government scheme began I liaised with my Head teacher to organise laptops for these children to use so they could access work and keep in touch.
Self control and self confidence- For others to listen to you when you speak or give presentations you need to have confidence in yourself and the message you are delivering. I have shown these skills through delivery of lessons and staff training.
