TIPS
By adding a
suffix
in English, however, the spelling of the original word
may change
. This is the case, for example, for words ending in
y
or
e
. Examples: dance -> dancing, happy -> happier, angry -> angrier.
Adding an English prefix does not change the spelling of the original word. Examples: Bilingual, forecast, intake, malfunction, irrational, etc.
Hyphen in English prefixes:
The hyphen is used after the English prefixes "ex-", "all", "well-" and "self-". Examples: ex-girlfriend, all-knowing, well-designed, self-conscious.
Common suffixes demand the use of a hyphen. Some exceptions are the English suffixes: -based (example: oil-based) and -style (modernist style).
