Supervisor meeting - 2021-11-15
Kate and Mark present
Derek ill
Kate and Mark probably ok for meeting next week
Extension approved
3 months only, and another 3 months it not desirable as I defo want to keep present examiners and wrap stuff up
Plus HE situation has now been resolved, so could I really argue for another extension?
Discussed meeting with Stephen
Kate noted that it was a hard science response, which will involve a lot more back and forth before any permissions are granted (if they ever are)
Likely due to prejudice against application of pXRF, rather than just impartial criticism, though suggestions are resonable
Must be careful with offer of support from HE, as could lead to them taking it over entirely, as they mentioned the equipment that they have in Portsmouth
It would be much easier to resolve such conversations face to face, but this will require careful cooperation and development of relationship with Mel before it may even be considered
Plan is to meet with Mel and explain situation
List of questions suggests that they want detailed responses, not necessarily a change in method, so do not have to redesign from scratch and submit again
This means no need to withdraw application or reply immediately, just let them know what is happening and take my sweet time to get back to them later and use results of ex-situ work to argue in my favour
Even if I did change my method in response to this, it is not a guarantee that they will meet me halfway. They still may not grant permission or require ridiculous new sampling locations.
Kate and Mark persuaded me that best course of action is to talk to Mel and explain that I will submit a detailed response and resume dialogue further down the line when my PhD is practically complete
Massive timesink otherwise, and no benefit to PhD whatsoever
Valuable in the long term though, as having SAMC may open funding doors to a future project
Even if work is never done, it is still useful to have the SAMC as I don't know what will happen in the future
Kate said that most post-doc project grants often have limited equipment budget, never more than 10k and often less than 5k
Mass sampling with ICP-MS is therefore not viable even for a project with a large grant, so not something I should really be even thinking about in a post-doc project
Would be great to tap into Hayward's data though, as would reuse existing resources (i.e. low risk) and thus add a wider context without much original research
Post-doc thoughts
Asked about possibility of move to Reading after PhD
No easy answer to develop relationships there, except to wow Mike with the quality of my PhD
Mark mentioned that networking will be key, which I am pretty poor at to be honest
Are there any more relevant conferences coming up?
Kate said we will have a more detailed chat about post-docs, funding and jobs in December
Range of organisations offering post-doc grants
e.g. AHRC
Other route is employment on an existing project working for someone else
Otherwise will just have to get a job
Will be interesting to see if there is potential for larger project funding to intersect with RB Foundation, Society for Roman Studies or something else
On the whole, good to think about but nothing I can really do until my PhD is wrapped up, so just focus on that
Briefly mentioned progress with pXRF analyses
Switched from pXRF1 to pXRF2
Reanalysing all my samples
Organised planning meeting with Tom Flemons on 24th November
Hopefully can get an understanding of what time frame (i.e. how long and when) they could do the work
Kate keen to come along to have a look at the sampling when it is happening
Probably early in the morning out of hours, so may be difficult for them to get there on time
Keep them updated about this and asks Zosia and Tom to make sure its ok for supervisors to come and watch if possible
Purchase order has been prepared and sent to Cliveden, so shouldn't need to do anything more at BU about this
When the sampling dates have been arranged, make sure to email Dean Etherton to let him know that the work will take place so that Cliveden can invoice BU
