TOPIC : GENERIC ROUTING ENCAPSULATION (GRE)
2 terms and concept :
1) overlay network
Center are connected point-to-point
2) underlay network
Packets are being routed accross multiple devices and multi networks
Tunnels create VPN overlay networks between remote sites.
Tunnels accomplish this by creating a virtual network (overlay network) on top of a physical underlying infrastructure (underlay network).
provide a logical interface that emulates a direct physical link connecting the two sites
INTRODUCTION
A non-secure,site to site VPN tunneling protocol
Transportation of multiprotocol and IP multicast traffic between two or more sites
Connect remote, geographically separated sites over an existing network, most notably routing over a public intrastructure
Characteristics
Defined as an IETF standard (RFC 2784)
IP header protocol field 47 is used to indicate GRE
GRE is stateless-tunnel endpoint does not keep any information about the state /availability of the remote tunnel endpoint.
THREE MAIN COMPONENTS:
Delivery header(Transport protocol)
Payload packet or Encapsulated protocol (Passenger protocol)-original IP packet
GRE Header (Carrier protocol)
