Prisons are central locations for contemporary art and culture. Particularly in the U.S., with an epidemic of mass incarceration, artmkaing is very active within prison life. Prison art is characterized by speaking on penal space, penal matter and penal time. Meaning that there is architectural confinement, limited access to materials and punishment is measured in time in the prison system, respectively. Sometimes inmates are even commissioned yet they see no source of income from their labor. One show called Ode to the Sea was shut down by the Pentagon. Although they initially approved the exhibition they didn't like the narrative on captivity that the work created. It is important for prison art to be appreciated and respected as it speaks to the rationality of art, highlights marginalized communities, and connects prisons to the outside world.
