Preservation of Dairy Products - Coggle Diagram
Preservation of Dairy Products
Problem
Due to dairy products fast multiplying of bacterias they have a high enzyme activity which causes mold to arise quickly.
Substances such as Sodium benzoate are added that preserve the dairy products.
What is Sodium benzoate
A crystalline powder, soluble in water and odorless
Sodium benzoate does not occur naturally
Chemically made by neutralising benzoate acid with sodium hydroxide.
Chemical Process
Formula: C7H6O2+ NaOh → C7H5NaO2+H2O
Benzoate acid+ sodium hydroxide → Sodium benzoate+ Water
Benzoate acid can be found naturally in plants like cranberries, raspberries or cinnamon.
How does Sodium benzoate help preserve dairy products?
Sodium benzoate enters each individual cell and balances the pH level by making the overall food more acidic.
The acid kills the bacterias and makes the dairy products last longer
Economical Impact
Companies want to keep their products fresh as long as possible, especially when they first have to be shipped from somewhere else
Companies benefit if their milk is still fine even if the cooling chain happens to be interrupted as they can still sell the dairy products.
Outcome
Limitations
There are health concerns such as increased hyperactivity in children or allergic reactions.
There are only regulation laws in the US and the EU and not in other countries
Benefits
It keeps dairy products fresh for longer
It is not dangerous if it is consumed in moderation.
Personal Opinion
The application of science on the given problem is a 4, however closer to a 3 than a 5.
This is because in small amounts the scientific solution isn't harmful and there aren't to many major issues with it.
However, especially the countries that do not regulate the maximum legal amount cannot provide proper health care in case people do get sick from too much exposure to the solution.
Ethical Impact
It is generally seen to be safe to consume Sodium benzoate, however there are certain health consequences if it is consumes too much and frequently.
Due to the health concerns, the US and the EU have laws that regulate the amount if Sodium benzoate allowed in food. (0.1%)
Other countries do not have such laws
Possible health consequences include...
It makes the milk more acidic which makes it more difficult for our body to balance out the consumes acidy.
People who already react allergic to Aspirin can also react alerigc to Sodium benzoate
People who have Asthma are also more likely to react allergic to Sodium benzoate
Sodium benzoate is under the suspicion on having negative effects on our nerve system and may cause things like ADHD
It is believed that Sodium benzoate can cause cancer in combination with Vitamin C
