Different types of experiments
indpendendant groups design
every member of the sample is randomly allocated to either the control or experimental group
cost and time efficient
there may be individual participant differences
matched participant design
each member of the sample is paired based on particular characteristic and then one member of each pair is randomly allocated to the control and on to the experimental group
few individual participant differences between groups
time consuming
repeated measure design
each member of the sample is involved in both the control and experimental conditions
no participant differences
order effects
case study
an in-depth study on a singular personal or small group
rare or unusual conditions
very detailed but difficult to generalise to the population
observational studies
a study reliant upon watching or observing others behaviours, actions and responses
situational or envionmental studies
more naturalistic setting but data can be subjective
self report
study reliant on participants feedback via various mediums
behaviour and opinions that can not be directly observed
data can be difficult to compare & analyse
questionnaires
very versatile and easy to administer in large numbers
interviews
can obtain lots of quality data as responses are open.
rating scales
fixed responses are more easily compared and measured
