Joints - Coggle Diagram
Joints
Characteristics of Synovial Joint
Articular surfaces covered by thin layer of hyaline cartilage
Fibrous capsule that are lined by synovial membrane and rich in nerve supply which makes it sensitive to movements imposed by stretching to protect from sprain.
Have synovial membrane that produce synovial fluid
Synovial fluid nourishes the articular cartilage and allows friction free movement
Intra-articular menisci, disc and fat pads
Structural Classification
Fibrous Joints
Syndesmosis
Interosseous ligament between two bones
Gomphosis
Peg and socket between tooth and socket
Sutures
Immovable joints in the skull
Cartilaginous Joints
Primary cartilaginous joint (Synchondrosis)
Hyaline cartilage band together to form strong immovable joint.
Secondary cartilaginous joint (Symphysis)
Covered by thin layer of hyaline cartilage and united by a disc of fibrocartliage.
Synovial Joints
Condylar Joint. eg: Knee Jt.
Ellipsoid Joint. eg: Wrist Jt.
Pivot Joint. eg: atlanto-axial jt.
Saddle Joint. eg: Sternoclavicular Jt.
Hinge Joint. eg: Elbow jt.
Ball-and-Socket Joint. eg: Hip joint
Plane Joint. eg: Intermetacarpal Jt.
Functional Classification
Synarthrosis (immovable). Eg: Fibrous Joints
Amphiarthrosis (slightly movable). Eg: Cartilaginous Joints
Diarthrosis (freely movable). Eg: Synovial Joints
Regional Classification
Skull Type (Immovable)
Vertebral Type (Slightly movable)
Limb Type (Freely movable)
