Law and justice
The lawcodes provide a hierarchy of courts at three levels- local and village level, district level and provincial level. Theft and assault on a person came under criminal law. Disputes regarding property came under civil law. Since the Guilds looked after the affairs of their members, the State was relieved of the burden of administering justice to a great extent. The final appeal lay to the King.
