Fertilization
Implantation
On the seventh day after fertilization, the zona pellucida dissolve and disappear.

-
Blastocyst burrows deeply into the endometrium, usually at the posterior of the uterus.
-
Once implanted, the zygote is called an embryo.

-
The outer layer of cell (trophoblast) will form to be the placenta, while the inner cell mass develops into embryo.
Fertilization
Fertilization or Conception is the process by which a sperm fuses with an ovum to form a new diploid cell, or zygote.
The Zygote begins life as a single cell with a complete set of a genetic material, 23 chromosomes from the mother’s ovum and 23 chromosomes from the father’s sperm for a total of 46 chromosomes
-
Sperm can survive in the female reproductive tract for 48 to 72 hours, but healthy sperm is about 24 hours.
The process of fertilization takes place in the ampulla of the fallopian
tube ( Taylor & Badell,2011).
Only one sperm can penetrate the ovum by release hyaluronidase that dissolves the layer of cells protecting the ovum.
Immediately upon entering the ovum, the chromosomal material of the ovum and spermatozoa fuse resulting in a zygote.
The first cleavage is complete at about 24 hours after fertilization, and this process continues once every 22 – 23 hours.
