Organizational Structures
Tall
A business hierarchy with many levels of management. Resembles a pyramid – fewer at top, spreading wider at the bottom. Has lots of layers but fewer people in each.
Advantages
Narrow span of control meaning easier for managers
Tighter control due to having fewer employees to manage
Directors and managers have specialist skills and expert knowledge
Disadvantages
ong chain of command meaning decisions go through lots of different layers
Poor communication and slow decision making as information can be lost as it gets passed on by different people
Number of managers required make the structure
Flat
A business hierarchy with few levels between top and bottom level. Lots of people per level (high span of workers)
Advantages
Short chain of command meaning less layers of management.
Communication is fast as there are less layers to pass information through.
Improved feedback to decision makers as communication is easier and faster.
Disadvantages
Long chain meaning lots of workers in each layer.
Wide span of control makes it harder to manage lots of people doing the same job.
Time-consuming role for managers due to lots of employees
