Oratorio
Beginning in the baroque period, an oratorio is a large work for orchestra, chorus, and soloists (vocal & instrumental), based on a religious or moral subject
The orchestra has ripieno and concertino sections, each with a continuo
Recitative can also be used in the oratorio
Da Capo Arias are used in an oratorio
Vocal soloists often perform together in duets, trios etc, in the oratorio
Sounds less serious than a mass

Can be played with a basso continuo
Used in an opera and oratorio to link arias together to inform the audience of the developing story
Could be accompanied by instruments (an orchestra, continuo, or just a single instrument such as a harpsichord) or could be completely unaccompanied.

Mass
A large scale religious vocal work with orchestral accompaniment
The main sections which are sung are called: Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Benedictus, Agnus Dei
Vocal choruses and soloists normally feature in the mass - there can be instrumental sections between the vocal parts
Listen for one of the six sections to be sung

Normally contains a tierce de Picardie at the end

A religious chant dating back to the early christian church which is sung in latin
Characteristic features are unison male voices, modal melodies and melismatic singing

The singer conveys strong and sincere emotions through a very expressive singing style
Soul music shows influences from Jazz, gospel and blues music in its rhythms and harmonies, and may also have some element of improvisation
