Role of Teacher
1830s
Create political rights for freed slaves. Teachers were supposed to have a sense of morality, and they were tasked with protecting this morality.
1930-1950
As there was a lot going on during this timeframe (the World Wars), teachers were to encourage students and education the best that they could. They were also to help students prepare for the harsh realities of the world.
1970-1980
Help guide students into the labor market. Create students and citizens that would participate in the economy and labor market.

Layers of Influence
Local Influences
Local communities go to representatives of the school board, who then go to the Superintendent.
School Choice is a layer of local influence as it allows parents to choose between public, private, or charter schools, as well as homeschooling or online school.
Federal Control
Categorical Aid: Money provided for specific federal programs such as Race to the Top and No Child Left Behind (or ESSA).
If a school accepts funds, they must accept federal requirements.
Involvement
Global, State, and Federal involvement had increased drastically as corporations influence educational practices and policies.

Political
Horace Mann believed that the schools were to be used to create citizens that would participate in a republican society.
Economic Growth
George Washington thought that in creating educated citizens, more people would join the workforce. This would then allow employers to keep wages low.
