Before the Imperialism
European Interactions
Early on in the 1400s, Europeans began interacting with Africans but they had very limited interactions and Africans were cautious to not give too much power to Europeans and they kept them at bay with their strong armies
Slave Trade
Slavery in Africa had been going on long before the Europeans arrived, however, slaves worked differently as they signed a contract for a fixed period of time where they worked with no freedom and after it expired they were normal citizens again, eventually Africa began trading slaves with European countries.
After a while Belgium finally became owner of their first colony in Africa, other European countries wanted to join in on this and started fighting for European territories until eventually most of Africa was colonized.
African Governments
The pre-conquest African governments consisted in centrized Empire, Kingdomes and City-States along with stateless societies
Centralized Empires
These were large empires that held a lot of power and had no separation of powers which led to being very centralized governments, most of them controlled trade through military power.

Decentralized Societes
These were governments that were closer to tribes than actual governments, leaders were chosen for their reputation or through a council of elders and were usually very strong, these governments were very autonomous and isolated.

After the conference of Berlin in 1884, Belgium rushed to get territories in Africa, in which later France, Britian, Spain and Germany
West Africa
In 1874 the few regions located near the Gold Coast were colonized by Great Britain and establishing a protectorate in Nigeria, and later in 1900 France would colonize most of the West African kingdoms making it have the largest part of this region.

Central Africa
David Livingstone was one of the first explorers to bring Central Africa to the rest of Europe.
When he died, Dr Stanley took the exploration and encouraged Belgium to take el Congo.
During this occupation of King Leopold, ivory, rubber where taken and Natives Exploited. The estimated death toll during this occupation is from 1 to 15 million Africans. After news of these abuses and killings, Belgium ceded Congo in 1908

South Africa
This region was the one where European Prescence grew the fastest
The Afrikaners, which were the descendants of the original Dutch settlers, Occupied Cape Town and the surrounding areas in the region of South Africa, However during the Napoleonic wars, The British seized the lands from the Dutch, and then encouraged their own settlers to go live in what they called Cape Colony
