Science-Heat, The Movement of Heat energy - Coggle Diagram
Science-Heat
effects of heat on a material
it can cause the material to increase in temperature
it can cause a material to expand
it can change the state of a substance
e.g solid to liquid
expansion
solids
expand
when
heated
liquis
expand
when
heated
gases
expand
when
heated
contraction
solids
contract
when
cooled
liquids
contract
when
cooled
gasses
contract
when
cooled
water
its an exemption to <---
as water cools it contracts
at 4 degrees it beings to expand again
Latent Heat
Is the energy needed to change the state of a substance without changing its temperature
Uses: ice cubes absorb latent heat from a drink when they change from a solid to a liquid
its a form of energy
measured in joules
The Movement of Heat energy
conduction
movement of heat through a substance without any overall movement of the substance itself
(solid)
convection
movement of heat through liquids and gases due to the motion of the substance itself
radiation
transfer of heat via radiation waves that can travel through a vacuum
the hotter an object is the more energy it radiates
dull black surfaces are good emmiters or radiators than shiny ones
the greater the surface area and temperature of the object, the faster the rate of heat transfer from it
ways of reducing radiation
it can be reduced by using reflective surfaces
e.g mylar blankets and thermos flasks. they have silver insides to keep the liquid warm
