Parable of the Wedding Banquet 1
The reluctant guests
The guests refused to join the wedding banquet and started to make excuses
One wanted to see his field, another wanted to try his oxen, and another refused to leave his wife
Since the host didn't want an empty banquet, he took steps to fill in the empty spots
The host sent his servants to call the under privileged people to come
If the invited wouldn't come, then the under privileged must become the guests
The highways and the hedges were combed to find people to enjoy the host's hospitality.
Joy had entered into lives of many, but those who were invited missed a chance
The banquet of God
The idea of a great banquet given by God was a thoroughly Jewish idea.
The Jews believed that when the Messiah came and the new age dawned one great event would be a banquet at which all sat down.
Jesus took over that old idea and used it
Jesus compared the Kingdom of Heaven to a feast.
Jesus thinks that The Kingdom of Heaven is a happy thing. Entering the Kingdom of Heaven was as joyous as going to a banquet
A lot of people thinks that Christianity took all the light, the zest, the joy out of life.
The new guests of God
The parable has a local significance. The invited guests are the Jews.
2.Their history was moulded to enable them to recognize and accept God’s Son
They refused the invitation and others entered into the places reserved for them.
Luke’s version of the parable has an interesting touch
After they refused to come, the lame are brought in
They were sinners, but saw Jesus as a welcoming friend
But after they have come, more and more unexpected guests are gathered in
Excuses
I have bought a field and I must go out and see it
I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to examine them
