- Important esp in a multicomponent group treatment programs
- Structure encourages rapid learning of new responses as it provide an efficient mean for members to learn new coping skills, educate themselves about mental or physical problems.
- Limitation: little individualization for each member
- Gives member start & end time of group session
- Focus on reviewing goals
To establish & maintain orderly communication & interaction pattern
- When guiding group activities, transitions should be smooth (summarising whats been stated)
- Capacity of members' independent functioning, nature and severity of problems, motivating levels and homogeneity of concerns
- Effective group workers have to pay attention to both optimum degree of structure for the group, process variables that may allow high level of cohesion
- Involving and empowering group members
- Empower members so that they can take charge of their life both outside & inside the group.
- Encourage them to try new behaviours & actions within the outside group
- Acknowledge each other's accomplishments & support each other when obstacles come
- Most effective group in middle stage should focused on helping member achieve their goals.
- This can be done so by: (1)Maintain awareness of goals (2) Develop specific treatment plans (3)Overcome obstacles to member's treatment plan (4)Carry out treatment plans
- Best way to led therapy group
- Group worker working with therapy group for people with specialise problems should use: Evidence Based Treatment Program & Guideline
- Important for worker to know that members have the right to not participate, but point out the consequences of refusal & non-negotiable aspects of participation
- Non-negotiable parts include: Rules about attendance & participation, coming to group intoxicated or high on drugs & not coming
Reasons why members are involuntary (1)Angry that they are considered as ppl that need help (2)Embarrassed that they need help (3)Sees themselves as failures (4) Finding problems daunting to change
Hence worker should Assess member's motivation for being in the group to identify how the group can be helpful to them, maximise member sense of control and expertise & develop non judgemental, accepting & safe environment for members to express their problem
- Useful in developing, modifying and changing treatment plans
- Helpful to maintain function of group as a whole
Ongoing process throughout the life of group
- Having members to self monitor their behaviour & have others that's familiar with member's concern to do so
- Obtaining feedback allows worker to fine tune group as it progresses
