AreaModel:

Steps to creating a model:

Create an area model that has the dimensions of your two denominators

Shade/color in the numerator that is associated with each of the denominators (rows and columns)

Then identify the total area of the area model (denominator of the answer)

Determine the total area of the double shaded/colored area (numerator of the answer)

Convert from mixed number to improper fraction:

To convert a mixed fraction to an improper fraction, follow these steps:

Multiply the whole number part by the fraction's denominator.

Add that to the numerator

Then write the result on top of the denominator

Example: 347=(7)(3)+47=257

Convert from improper fraction to mixed number:

Divide the numerator by the denominator.

Write down the whole number answer

Then write down any remainder above the denominator.

Example: 113=113=3 with 2 remainder so we get 323

Step 1: Add/subtract the top numbers (the numerators), put that answer over the denominator

Step 2: Simplify the fraction (if possible)

25+15=2+15=35

Step 1: Make sure the bottom numbers (the denominators) are the same

You may have to find common denominator

Then find equivalent fractions

Step 2: Add/subtract the top numbers (the numerators), put that answer over the denominator

Step 3: Simplify the fraction (if possible)

Model:

Create equal wholes using the denominators as dimensions

Compare the values and see how many are in each group

Determine how many whole groups can be made if any

Determine what portion of the group you are trying to make can be made
