LANGUAGE AND GENDER
Dominance
In brief
-
Men's language holds more power than women's, is superior
Pamela Fishman
Shitwork
-
Refers to how women have to make more effort for the conversation to progress due to lack of men's input
-
-
Research findings
-
-
-
Attention gestures
-
Men- hardly ever used attention gestures (perhaps because they assumed they had attention due to thier dominance)
-
She does not suggest that language is contributing to male domiance, rather that it is used to excersise it
Disagreements
-
Robin Lakoff suggests that women asking questions demonstrates inferiority and hesitance, Fishman says that it gives women conversational power as they lack societal power
-
-
Diversity
In brief
Acknowledges that sex and gender should be treated seperately, argues that biological sex does not influence language
-
In a perfect equal society, there would be no difference in the use of language between genders (environmentally deterministic approach)
Judith Butler
1990 book 'Gender troubles' describes how sex and gender is different, sex is biological and gender is man-made by society
-
-
We are 'trained' to act in gender specific ways which determines our self image, over time the socially dominant norms of society become internalised and reinforced
Gender is constructed by our language use, our gender doesn't determine our language use
-
deb cam
'the idea that men and women...use language in very different ways and for very different reasons is one of the great myths of our time'
-
myths have acted to shape our expectations of men and women and the linguistic behaviour that we should expect.
-
Difference
In brief
-
Neither type is superior, they just are in contrast
Deborah Tannen

Ways
Independence vs intimacy
Men are concerned with staus and therefore being independent, relying on others would suggest weakness or insecurity in thier speech/ opinions
-
-
-
Status vs support-
Men's speech is competitive trying to prevent others from dominating them, language is a way to gain and maintain status
Women's language is more supportive and they speak for confirmation and validation from men, they support the man speaking
Orders vs proposals
-
Women will pose a command as a request or proposal, indirectly
Conflict vs comprimise
Men will openly resist and oppose others, perhaps due to wanting to maintain strength and status
-
-
Defecit
In brief
-
This deficiency suggests that women cannot do some things which men can (some people have this view on humour)
Robin Lakoff

Criticisms
No research
All ideas are based off of 'observations' which have no scientific method, can't be trusted
Quote from Lakoff "It is my impression, though I don't have precise statistical evidence"
Example of STRONG gender determinism- the strength of an individual's belief that gender is a foundational force dictating people's: personality traits, behaviors, abilities, attitudes, and values.
Highly generalised and ignores individual differences, only focuses on gender affecting speech
