LIGHTING DESIGN
BY Valerie Dale
Wash fixtures lights that will east a large, even field of light. They don’t have much control it’s really just to illuminate an area.
Automated lights with a wide variety of options in colors, gobos, and focus areas all in one instrument.
-What stood out to me most about the role of a Lighting Designer is the fact that lighting in theatre has a plot it follows. Lighting can be used in the indication of stage position and time for performers, it even sets the mood.
- Backlighting + accent lighting. I find it interesting when lighting is used to accent certain objects or people on stage to showcase their significance. (Jay Yonge)

Lighting is an important element in the production of the play because different lighting can portray different moods like for example blue light can represent sadness or calm. Also the way that light shines on people/objects can draw the audience attention to that object signifying it significance in the production or the way that the lights contrast the stage. Alexie
-Selective Focus
-McCandless method
I think it is cool how there can be selective focus used in performances to get everyone to focus on a certain section only.(Laura Cummings)
Lighting designers have to take into account not only the elements of the scene that require certain types of lighting but also how the colors of the set and costumes will be affected (Emersynn Mousaw)
I found it very interesting how it's important to look at the world around us to be a good lighting designer and how lighting can really enhance a scene (Emersynn Mousaw)
Black hole: the accidentally unlit portion of the stage. Ambient light: The light in a venue with no stage-lighting sources switched on. Background light. What stood out to me about the role of the lighting designer was how they can really control the mood and expectation of the play. I like how just by choosing specific colors or angles it can give a whole new vibe to the story. (Zipporah Muse)
Honestly in my opinion lighting is one of the if not the most important parts of theatre. It would make or break a play. Also if the lighting is the same you coils end up losing the crowd. (Nick Grant)
I think that lighting plays a very significant factor in setting the mood of a scene in a production. Typically, anytime I have watched something and the creators wanted to evoke a sense of fear or panic, there would be a prolonged use of red lights strobe lights, making the audience feel as anxious and as panicked as the actors
Being a lighting designer requires an artistic and detail-oriented eye. Even the smallest of things to us, like shadows or streaks of light, add incredible detail to a finished light design. Lighting can, and does, add a mood and depth to performance in order to enhance the message: this is the goal of the lighting designer. -Arielle Sheehan

A lighting plot is written with various details such as a scale of the direction of light, the tools used and the number of tools utilized. Once lights are assigned, they are they put into a sheet or book so that people know which lights are assigned to which. (Ajsa Mehmedovic)

Color palet plays a big part in lighting design because certain hues bring a different emotion than what's intended. The placement of the lighting will determine mood as well as set a setting.(Serea lee)
Lighting is one of the most important and time consuming jobs within theatre. The entire mood can be changed with one flip of a switch to change the color or dimmed to portray whatever mood is trying to be put out.
Putting up lights in a blackbox theatre is extremely difficult and time consuming when you need just the right light in just the right spot which is why I will never work on lights ever again haha
(Sky Rynasko)
The job of the lighting designer was very important which I knew but I didn't realize how much of the production actually rests on their shoulders. They help create the scenery and there's so much that actually goes into the production with the lights depending on the show.
Composition: The directing eye that has the audience focus on a particular point on stage.
Hazers: a machine that changes the atmospheric conditions on stage by using safe chemicals.
(Michael Saavedra)
I liked the four things to think about he mentioned, (intensity, color, direction, and movement) - Dillan Tidd
I liked how when asked about the color blue, his answer
was "blue is just my color and it works". It shows that not everything has to be as difficult as some people make it seem! -Abigail Skellington-Bice
I found the Lighting Plot and the Accent Lighting the most interesting. I like how important lighting is to a scene, especially accent lighting, it can change the form of the whole plot.
-Hunter Caiazzo
I think it is interesting how much attention you have to pay to other things such as costume colors, and scene designs. If any colors overlap things on stage may look like they aren't there. I also like the different shapes and accents you can make with lighting by putting different filters over it. (Jacqueline Welch)

I had no idea the amount of technicalities that went into creating a lighting setup. I was surprised to see the Lighting Plot that he showed us that basically showed how every light in the theater area will be used. Another part that I like was how with the correct lighting, you could hide certain stage elements until they were ready to be revealed in the story with backlighting. - Cedric Buschfrers
When watching the play elsewhere I paid really close attention to the lighting. I feel like the lighting changes the entire mood and tone of the play and I think its super interesting. (Gianna Vario)
Color has a big part in how lighting plays out and I didn't really think about drawing attention to certain spaces. I like the term "light plot". It's very interesting considering that when someone thinks of a plot they think of a storyline. SO the lighting is kind of creating a storyline of its own (Cailyn Pendry).
Two terms that I learned from all this was Accent lighting and back projections. What stood out to me about the role of the lighting designer is how hard they have to work to try to portray the emotion of the scene while also keeping many different lights going at the same time. I just find it so interesting how much a light can do to a show since it pretty much portrays the action and feeling of the play without a verbal message. (Jenci Lopez)
I like lighting, especially in movies and shows because often time it can convey emotions.
(Matthew Espey)
- Accent lighting and Selective Focus. I think it is really interesting that lighting designers have so much power in shows because they have the ability to direct the audiences' focus to any part of the stage/show and it can completely change the performance depending on how it is done. (Sydney Manchester)

Lighting is a great way to get the audience attention back on what’s being shown on stage or on screen. (Jaden Jiggetts)
Lighting design is very important to the production of a film or play. It sets to tone and sometimes to mood for the audience to experience. It also allows for the scene to be portrayed in any way the lighting designer wants it to. (Claire Francois)
Lighting has the very important role of setting the tone of a play. When a lighting designer is creating the lights for a scene they have to take into account the tone that scene is trying to convey.
I found the discussion about intensity and color to be very interesting. The intensity and color has a big impact on the mood and how the audience perceives the show. -Delaney Koehl
-How big of a deal color is in the lighting process
and how where the lights are put can change how something is viewed
(Grace Barraco)
I found interesting what was said about lighting design in the class presentation regarding lighting for Elsewhere and how most colors used were purple and blue with intentional highlights of red. Looking back at it, alot of the shows in the department were lit with blue and purple. (Ajsa Mehmedovic)
I think lighting is an underappreciated yet vital part of a performance. It can be a bit difficult to tell if lighting is done well or not, but it is VERY EASY to see when it is done poorly. Accent lighting and lighting plot shows just how delicate and precise the lighting has to be. Sofia Gamboa
Lighting design is extremely important to a show. The lighting can set the mood for the show. Warmer colors being happier and cooler colors being more somber. It can also draw the attention of the audience's attention away from other things happening on stage.
-Brian Burrows
1.Lighting designer has a very important role in that, they or a passive narrator of the story, instead of directly telling what is happening, the lighting designer can tell audiences where to look at, who is currently the spotlight of the scene. (Quan Ngoc Trinh)
2.They are also the one to create tension between scenes. lighting could be used to make the scene dramatic, using different or even chaotic light show. Or a romantic scene using light but warm color and distinct placement.(Quan Ngoc Trinh)
Add the things that stood out to you about lighting design based on the guest speaker and/or the reading!
-Lighting plot
-focus call
I think the use of warm colors over cool colors to grasp attention in certain scenarios is interesting. (Emily Reischer)
I find it interesting how in theatre, lighting design entails more than merely ensuring that the audience can see the stage. Light can be used to indicate a performance's place or time, as well as to generate and accentuate mood and ambiance. - Logan Bashkin
Gel is a colored plastic filter placed in front of a lighting instrument in order to change the color of the light it emits. This stuck out since I usually hear the word gel for hair substances, but to change color is extrodinary. For lightboard, it's a highly specialized computer and its sole purpose is to control the level, or amount of light, that each fixture puts out. Now controlling the amount of light and its fonts is pretty cool. -Dexter Coburn

I feel that Lighting in a play or movie could demonstrate the setting and mood of what is coming next or help show a character’s emotion. For example, Rain could demonstrate a character feeling upset or sad. (Jaden Jiggetts)
