When adding and subtracting fractions we must have common denominators. This is the same as finding common multiples. Now we are going to merge 1) finding equivalent fractions and 2) find a common denominator.

mixed numbers
A mixed number is a single value that has two parts, a whole number and a fraction. Example: 423 with the 4 being 4 wholes and the 23being the fractional part.
Equivalent fractions
Fractions which have the same value, even though they may look different.
Example 1/2 and 2/4 are equivalent, because they are both "half", the amount of pieces changes.

a number that may be divided by another a certain number of times without a remainder.

The multiples of 3 are: 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, ... etc
The multiples of 5 are: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, ... etc
So, a common multiple of 3 and 5 is 15 (and 30, 45, etc ..., as well)
impropper fraction
is a fraction where the numerator is greater than the denominator. It shows how many total fractional parts there are in the entire value. Example: 312=72 the 72is an improper fraction.
