The reason a child is neglected or rejected may be shyness, lack of social skills, antisocial behavior, or prejudice on the part of the group. Children who do not know how to initiate a friendship, who are withdrawn, who misinterpret others’ emotional states, who have difficulty communicating, who are bossy, who are disruptive in class, and/or who rarely praise their peers are not readily accepted by the group. Also, children who are poor losers, who cheat or whine, and who are aggressive are not welcome in most children’s groups. Antisocial behavior is the most consistent correlate of peer rejection.
