in the period just before the outbreak of Civil War, when slavery existed, black Americans are portrayed as good for nothing more them servile labour. The film then deals with epic battles of the Civil War involving a cast of thousands. During that time, Radical Republican white politicians from the north are seen economically exploiting the South. it also shows freed black men keen on intermarriage with white women. The heroes of that part of the film are the KKK who are portrayed as defenders of all that is noble in the South, as hooded raiders who serve out 'Justice' . They treated black people as ingerior, denying them the right to vote and keeping them in a subservient, inferior position in society.
