      - Black American civil rights groups like the NAACP protested against the film. Director D.W.Griffith was a southern white who remembered stories about the Reconstruction period in the South from elderly relatives.
      - led to rise in KKK support, 1915-1926- KKK grew rapidly. 1921- 100,000 members, 1924- 4 million. 1925- William Simmons, at stone Mountains in Atlanta, Georgia refounded the KKK and claimed that the Birth of a Nation was a key factor in the development.
      - Hollywood marketed film as sensational. Premiered at a grand gala screening with expensive tickets. President Woodrow Wilson had a private screening at the white house- he liked the film.

The film then deals with epic battles of the Civil War involving a cast of thousands. During that time, Radical Republican white politicians from the north are seen economically exploiting the South. it also shows freed black men keen on intermarriage with white women. The heroes of that part of the film are the KKK who are portrayed as defenders of all that is noble in the South, as hooded raiders who serve out 'Justice' . They treated black people as ingerior, denying them the right to vote and keeping them in a subservient, inferior position in society.
