Supervisor meeting notes - 2021-11-08
Only Mark and I present
Kate busy with REF stuff
Derek may be abroad
Important that I have meetings with Kate and Stephen prior to supervisor meeting next week
Copy Mark in on any developments from these
pXRF progress
A third of the way through but pXRF 1 began to yield very poor results so switched to pXRF 2
Need to redo analyses using pXRF 2
Opportunity to double check fabric under microscope and record with digital microscope while doing this
Include loose offcuts from fabric reference collection, and remove samples too small or irregular to analyse from list
Need to redo stats to make sure that 3 x short beams still remains the best option for analysis
Discussed plan to fragment CBM webs work and site tests to make pXRF method paper with important points about deployment on archaeological ceramics
Will be good to get new stats rerun so that I can edit my methods section and then send round to supervisors to explain my choices
HE response
Response received on Friday 5th November
Suggests that drilling be substituted with coring and that alternative methods generating higher quality data be implemented
E.g. ICP-MS, micro XRF, thin-section petrography
Clearly not the time or funds to actually incorporate this feedback into the PhD => ex-situ sampling will be done alone
Hints that they liked the proposal and are interested in my post-doc work, which might be an opening to begin dialogue with HE over a post-doc investigating the stone from the Roman Baths
In any case, in-situ will not go ahead in PhD project but remains an option for a post-doc
Backing of HE for a post-doc actually might open a substantial number of doors for funding for the project
Could easily see a project investigating stone sources in much greater depth, potentially even with Maurice or Kevin Hayward
In any case, no need to worry about a post-doc now as have the rest of my PhD to get done!
Important to have meetings with Kate and Stephen to go through this news and how best to reply to keep dialogue open in case of any post-doc work or equipment access
Stephen may have very good advise for how to navigate this, but I am sure Kate will too, though may look at it unfavourably as not in the confines of my PhD
Museums & Academia
Discussed with Mark Zosia's idea of the role of research coordinator at Museums, with a role precisely in the middle of Museums and Academia and ideally placed to facilitate productive cooperation and utilisation between the two
Agglomerated Heritage trusts, like South-west Heritage Trust, or Hampshire Heritage Trust might be good organisations to demo something like this
Roman CBM and our environment
Chatted with Mark through my ideas about how the study of Roman building materials can be linked to modern environmental arguments
Particularly relevent is need to reuse, as the Romans did, but also that in doing so we need to reorientate our perceptions of stone and CBM, with low carbon options perhaps being prioritised in future
Would be good to get a blog post written about this to get research more visible to the public
Need to get in touch with Zosia and begin arranging ex-situ stone sampling
Would be good to get all the sampling done before Christmas if possible
Vital to use this period to collect more reference materials from outcrops around Bath
Is drilling done wet or dry? How would this affect sample prep? Contact Cliveden to make sure
