Set during the rebellion of Charles Edward Stuart (James II's grandson) and his Scottish supporters (Jacobites) against King George II Hanover.
Edward Waverley, the son of a Hanoverian supporter, has been educated by his uncle, a Jacobite supporter.
Edward is sent to join the army of George II but the daughter of a Jacobite family friend, Rose, falls in love with him.
He is attracted by Flora, the sister of Fergus, the chief of the Jacobite rebels. He betrays his mates and joins the Jacobites. Jacobites are defeated and Fergus is killed. Waverly, after being rejected by Flora, who has entered a convent, is forgiven by the king and marries Rose
