        Set during the struggle between the Normans and the Saxons. Ivanhoe is an Anglo-Saxon nobleman who is in love with Rowena but Ivanhoe's father contrasts his love and banishes him. He joins King Richard I in the Crusades, but when he comes back, the country is oppressed by the King's brothers and the Norman invaders, led by the knight Bois-Gilbert, who has fallen in love with the jewish girl Rebecca. Rebecca is accused of witchcraft and Ivanhoe defends her in a tournament during which Bois-Gilbert dies. Then Ivahnoe defeats the Normans with the help of Richard I (disguised as the Black Knight) and Locksley (Robin Hood).
        The Anglo-Saxons and the Normans learn to live together.

        Set during the rebellion of Charles Edward Stuart (James II's grandson) and his Scottish supporters (Jacobites) against King George II Hanover.
        Edward Waverley, the son of a Hanoverian supporter, has been educated by his uncle, a Jacobite supporter.
        Edward is sent to join the army of George II but the daughter of a Jacobite family friend, Rose, falls in love with him.
        He is attracted by Flora, the sister of Fergus, the chief of the Jacobite rebels. He betrays his mates and joins the Jacobites. Jacobites are defeated and Fergus is killed. Waverly, after being rejected by Flora, who has entered a convent, is forgiven by the king and marries Rose
