Mr and Mrs Bennet live in Longbourn, a small country village in Hertfordshire, with their 5 daughters Jane, Elizabeth, Mary, Lydia and Kitty.
The rich bachelor Charles Bingley rents Netherfield Park, an estate in the neighbourhood.
After some balls, Mr Bingley falls in love with Jane and his best friend Fitwilliam Darcy is attracted by Elizabeth Bennet.
Darcy declares his love but shows also contempt for her inferior social position, so Elizabeth rejects him and accuses him of separating her sister and Bingley and of ill-treating George Wickham, the son of Darcy's former steward.
Darcy writes a letter to reveal that Wickham is an unscrupulous adventurer, but meanwhile Wickham elopes with Lydia.
Darcy traces them and provides for their wedding.
Elizabeth realises that Darcy was a good person and accepts his proposal, in spite of the opposition of Lady Catherine De Bourgh, Darcy's aunt.
Finally, Bingley comes back and engages to Jane and 2 happy marriages are celebrated.
