Thermoregulation - Coggle Diagram
Thermoregulation
Therapeutic Hypothermia
At Risk Populations
Individuals who have experienced/been diagnosed with the following: TBI, MI, hemorrhagic shock, neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy
Primary Prevention
Prevention measures to avoid developing diseases/events that place individual at risk for needing therapeutic hypothermia measures
Tertiary Interventions
Cooling for 72 hours to reach target temperature, rewarming over 6-12 hours, continued monitoring of core body temperature, maintain tissue integrity
Interrelated Concepts
Tissue Integrity, Thermoregulation, Oxygenation, Perfusion
Newborn Hypothermia
At Risk Populations
Preterm infants, low birth weight infants
Primary Prevention
Drying infant immediately after birth, maintain warm birthing environment, adequately dressing infant after birth
Tertiary Interventions
Promote skin to skin contact, use of radiant warmer during baths (avoid bathing newborn infants first 24 hours of life), place hat on newborn, educate parents on maintaing adequate body temperature for infants (proper clothes, environment)
Malignant Hyperthermia
At Risk Populations
Individuals with bulky muscles, family history of MH, family history of unexplained death during surgery, individuals with high stress levels, diagnosis of neuroleptic malignant syndrome
Primary Prevention
Avoidance of triggering agents (anesthetics), avoid excessive heat environments, knowledge of susceptibility and family history
Tertiary Interventions
Administer Dantrolene, place oxygen, apply cooling blanket, administer cool IV fluids, correct dysrhthmias/hyperkalemic state/metablic acidosis, apply ice packs to the groin and axilla
