Human Growth and Development
Changes in body and social, emotional, health
People move from one development level to the next throughout growth and levels much catch up as the body grows
EX: Baby sounds progress to speech, Growth move from head to feet etc.
Neonatal and Infant Period
Extends throughout the first 2 years of life
Throughout this time the child experiences rapid physical growth and development
EX: Hold head up, turn over, sit, crawl, etc.
Vision is not clear but hearing and taste develop as well as certain reflexes
Routine is mainly sleeping, eating, and eliminating, newborn is completely dependent on caregiver
Toddler Period
Busy active period during which the exploration and investigation are the main activities
EX: Learns to control elimination, begins to become aware of right and wrong, may play in company of other children but no interaction, etc.
Preschool Years
Builds on motor skills and verbal skills developed as toddler but more curious and ask many questions
EX: Grows less reliant on caregiver, develops rivalries with other children, becomes cooperative, etc.
School Age
Able to communicate, developed fine motor skills, increase sense of self, etc.
Preadolescence
Transitional stage to the teen years, period of great uncertainty
EX: Growing interest of opposite sex, hormonal changes, etc.
Adolescence
Marked by, development of sexual maturity, greater appreciation of individuals own identity, etc.
Early Adulthood
Marked by, independence and personal decision making, the choice of mate, established career and life, etc.
Middle Age
Associated with, final career advancement, adult children leaving home to establish their own life, health usually still at good levels, etc.
Later Maturity
Marked by, gradual loss of vitality and stamina, physical declines related to aging process, chronic conditions that develop and persist, etc.
Old Age
Period of development and enjoyment
Characterized by, Failing physical health, acceptance of ones mortality
Basic Human Needs
Age Appropriate Care
Elderly: Introduce yourself, Address patient by first and last name, speak slowly, etc.
Personality
Sum of ways we react to events in our lives and satisfy our needs
Physical Needs
Nutrition, rest, oxygen, shelter, elimination, activity, sexuality
Meeting Physical Needs
Breathing assistance, assist in bathroom, feeding tube or assisted feeding, ensure temp is comfortable, bathing, etc.
Security and Safety
Maintaining safe environment, taking measure to prevent injury, etc.
Emotional Needs
To give, feel, be loved, treated with respect, self esteem
Intimacy and Sexuality
Respect privacy, speak before opening curtains, no judging of behaviors, discuss personal sexual info in private with patient, etc.
Human Touch
Should not be overlooked, reserved in adults
Fearful Patients
Give the patient to talk and listen to them, ay be a sign of needed reassurance
Patient Privacy
Patients must feel certain that their privacy is protected even when preforming the most intimate procedures
Spiritual
Apt to guide a patients actions and responses, important to respect such needs
Social Needs
Self esteem. When communicating verbally, word choice, tone of voice, facial expression important.
