TEACHING DANCE FOR YOUNG CHILDREN
MOTIVATING CHILDREN
teach by invitation. offer plenty of movement choices through open ended tasks
when you debrief the lesson, discuss feelings again, allowing students to have a voice
actually participate with our student when possible and accept student interpretations of tasks as long they are trying hard
do not require students to perform in front of the whole class.
COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT
creative dance allows students to make many decisions as to how they will:
interpret music
solve problems
include everyone
decision making
SAFETY
Ensure that student have enough space to move without colliding with walls, equipment or others student
The work space must in a clean and free from hazards
Make sure the props such as scarves, hoops, drums and etc. are in working and that students know how to use them properly
Insist that students respect one another’s space (don't be selfish!)
Do not allow them to use sock. Even on carpets, sock feet can be too slippery.
DANCE: CURRICULUM CONTENT
basic rhythm:
unilateral movement (performed on one side of the body)
bilateral movement (performed on both sides of the body in unison-symmetrically)
cross lateral movement (alternating sides of the body)
creative :
focus on the development of the whole child
movement exploration
reaching progressive levels of physical development while exploring their own creativity
imagination have the opportunity to improvise
engage in creative problem solving
grow in cognitive
social and emotional ways as they interact in class
folk dance :
dances performed at functions often to traditional music by an inherited tradition rather than by innovation
(although like all folk traditions they do evolve)
social dance :
where socializing is the primary focus of the dancing
can be dances with a variety of partners and still be led
followed in a relaxed easy atmosphere
SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT
Ask the children to cooperate learning with each others
Children work together to learn a prescribed dance, create new dance, teach one another their creations.
When us as a teacher that are caring, inclusive and supportive dance learning atmosphere, us reinforce the vital social skills of respect for and nurturing of individual needs & abilities.
DEVELOPMENTALLY APPROPRIATE
If you design a dance curriculum that allows children to respond and progress at their own level and rates, you will be designing a developmental appropriate dance curriculum
