PPE – Responsibilities
It is the responsibility of an organisation to provide adequate PPE whenever there
are risks and hazards which cannot be eliminated or controlled in other ways. The
organisation or employer also has the responsibility to ensure that health and
safety regulations, policies and procedures are observed.
It is also the responsibility of a worker to comply with all health and safety
regulations, policies and procedures and ensure that PPE provided to him is fit for
use and he must report any defects, damage or deterioration to a supervisor.

Hazards
Some chemicals or other substances give off vapour which can be a hazard in the
workplace. Toxic fumes are also a hazard. For example, the exhaust fumes of an
engine must be protected against. Protection from toxic fumes and vapour is done
with the use of a mask, respirator or full breathing apparatus, which offers the most
complete protection. Masks and other PPE are also used to protect a worker from
dust, which is an allergen and can cause an allergic reaction.

Some chemicals and substances such as oil, solvent, detergent are irritants and
can cause mild or severe irritation to exposed areas of skin. This irritation appears
as a rash or, in some cases, as severe dermatitis. In all cases, the worker should
seek medical attention and report the problem in the appropriate way. If a worker is
handling such substances, correct PPE, such as safety gloves and an overall, must
be used.
