Compost
-
C:N Ratio
Composting microorganisms, require the correct proportion of Carbon for energy and Nitrogen to make DNA & Protein
-
Rule of thumb = 2 Parts Green to 1 Part Brown but it depends on inputs. Do 1:1 if just adding ingredients gradually
What to put in ?
Anything that was alive recently! - (if you do it correctly with enough time and or heat) See Red Gardens videos on youtube.
-
Green & Browns
Browns - Carbon rich materials, - paper, cardboard, fallen leaves, woodchip, sawdust
Greens - Nitrogen rich materials = food scraps, grass clippings, weeds, urine, manure.
-
Air
-
Turning / moving pile for aeration and or design of system to promote aeration is important. There are exceptions.
-
Volume
Needs to be big enough for micro-organisms to generate enough heat that it 'takes off'. 1 m3 is good size
Time
Very variable - from super-fast 18 day composting to 2 years. 'Curing' or maturing compost is important to get the best final crumbly black gold :)
