Understanding Earthquakes
Measuring earthquakes
MOMENT MAGNITUDE SCALE (MMS) is preffered to measure magnitude. Measures total energy released at the exact moment.
Size of seismic waves. Amount of rock movement. Resistance of affected rock.
Scientists measure earthquakes in terms of magnitude and intensity
RICHTER SCALE can be used to measure magnitude.
Intensity can be measured using MERCALLI SCALE.
VOLCANIC EXPLOSIVITY INDEX (VEI) measure volcanoes
Hazard profile
Earthquakes, volcanoes and tsunamis have different characteristics
Magnitude,
speed of onset, duration, frequency and spatial probability
Primary Impacts
Direct result of the natural hazard
Ground shaking
crustual fracturing
Secondary Impacts
Impacts that come after the intial disaster
Tsunami
Liquefaction
Landslides
