Equivalence Orientations
Equivalence: the goal of translation, sometimes referred to as "correspondence" (basically, word or verse A should be the same as word or verse B)
Formal equivalence (TT message in both form and content should closely match the various ST elements)
Dynamic equivalence (trying to attain a more complete naturalness of expression, often associated with freer approaches to translation)
-
Expressive Function→ST Author→Formal equivalence
Informative Function→ST Message→Cognitive equivalence
Vocative Functions→TT Reader→Dynamic equivalence
Basic Language Functions
-
Vocative (influence the reader, make requests), appellative, persuasive
Expressive (express experiences, emotions, attitudes), artistic
-
Translation Approaches
