LO4.1: Incidents and emergencies
Accidents
Poor working practices can also be the cause, e.g. not moving/ handling a person correctly.
Individuals may be more prone to accidents due to their lack of mobility or lack of awareness of hazards.
Can be the result of poorly maintained areas, fittings or equipment, e.g. scalds from hot water temperatures.
Spillages
Spillages of bodily fluids, e.g. blood, vomit, urine and faeces can lead to outbreaks of infections and can cause diseases if contaminated with pathogens.
Spillages of waste and other hazardous substances can also have serious consequences for those who work, live in and visit services.
Floods
Failure to carry out maintenance can cause floods.
Diseases can also be carried in water through flooding.
These are usually caused by water escaping from washing machines, baths, toilets, water tanks or pipes.
Other critical incidents
Gas leaks can also occur from faulty appliances and gas work.
A bomb threat should always be taken seriously.
Faulty light switch or electrical appliance can cause the power to cut.
Exposure to infections
Poor environmental conditions can create conditions where pathogens that cause infections can thrive.
Poor working practices can also encourage the growth of pathogens, e.g. poor personal hygiene/ poor cleaning of facilities.
Individuals may be more susceptible to bacterial infections, e.g. MRSA and Norovirus.
Exposure to chemicals
These substances are classified as very toxic, harmful, corrosive and irritant.
If there is a spillage people can also be exposed expectedly or if not stored, used or disposed of correctly.
Individuals can be exposed to a hazardous substance, e.g. when cleaning areas or sterilising equipment.
Aggressive and dangerous encounters
People can hit out and become violent, e.g. if someone has abused alcohol.
Loss of water supply
This could indicate a burst pipe - this is usually down to a failure to carry out maintenance checks.
This can impact care work, e.g. cooking, washing and drinking.
Suspected or Actual abuse
It can have a long-term impact and serious consequences.
This could occur in any type of setting and even though it might be suspected some people may not report it.
Fire
Fire safety is everyone's responsibility and fires can have devastating consequences.
Fires will only start if oxygen is present in the air, fuel (solid, liquid or gas items that can burn) is present and heat (e.g. from a cigarette).
Intruders
Poor working practices can also lead to intruders, e.g. unauthorised access.
Intruders could access confidential information and cause harm and emotional upset.
If a premises is poorly maintained there may be broken door locks/ inadequate window locks.
