Bullying is a form of youth violence wherein one or more persons use unwelcome aggressions toward others over whom there is a power imbalance.
Bullies can be anyone as bullying has many causes ranging from social the employment of a defense mechanism to a form of social domination.
Bullying can also happen to anyone as bullying takes many forms, including physical assault, verbal abuse, and psychological harassment
Some Symptoms of Bullying:
- a sense of dread
- excessive or acute stress
- depression
- anxiety
- suicidal tendancies
- difficulty concentrating
- poor mood
- low energy levels
- lack of sleep
- lack of appetite
Strategies for Responding to (or Preventing) Bullying:
- Tell a trusted adult
- Ignore the bully and disengage
- Act as if you are unaffected
- Don't respond with violence
- Try to understand and reason with the bully
- Practice confidence
- Talk to someone impartial (venting)
- Find allies amongst your true friends
- Advocate for others you see being bullied
