after hearing of the Thane of Cawdor's betrayal, Duncan orders for him to be killed and for his title to be given to Macbeth
the witches meet Macbeth and Banquo, telling Macbeth he will become Thane of Cawdor and later king, and Banquo that he will beget kings
Macbeth is given the title of Thane of Cawdor, and is shocked and writes to Lady Macbeth
after finding out Duncan is staying at their castle, Lady Macbeth plans to kill him
Macbeth isn't sure at first, but is determined by the end and kills Duncan
