He walks a long way back to the hotel by himself. On his way back, he gets cold and wishes he had his gloves, which were stolen at Pencey, with him. He likes to think about himself fighting the thief, but then recognizes himself as a “coward” since he knows that he wouldn’t be able to get into a fight. When he arrives at Edmont, the elevator operator (Maurice) offers to send him a prostitude. Holden admits to the reader that he’s a virgin. He says that he doesn't stop when a girl tells him to stop, unlike the other guys like Stradlater. He accepts Maurice’ offer. However, he doesn’t have sex with the prostitude (Sunny) since he feels depressed. Sunny gets annoyed at him and wants her money, giving a price more than what Maurice’d given to Holden. Holden refuses to pay more than he was told, and Sunny leaves the room.
