- - - - Trevor faces many problems throughout the novel but the main problem that Trevor had to face was growing up as a colored child, born to a white father and black mother at the time of apartheid.He had to learn how to slip though the cracks and live his life without getting caught. Through this challenge that he was facing he was able to rely on his mother. He responded to the challenge by growing in his relationship with his mother and learnt how to live in a way that kept him safe.
