PROTEINS
PURPOSE; restore and recover muscle tissue, maintain pH and fluids
Carboxyl group, a functional group made up of a carbonyl group with a hydroxyl group attached to the same carbon atom.
Amino Group- a functional group made up of a nitrogen atom attached by single bonds to hydrogen atoms, alkyl groups, aryl groups, or all three
Protein general structure
Monomer=Amino acids
R-Group, a.k.a side chain gives each amino acid protein characteristics such as size, polarity, and pH
Protein sub unit structures
Peptide bonding is when multiple amino acids are linked together, forming a long chain. When the carboxyl group of one molecule reacts with the amino group of the other molecule it releases a water molecule (H2O).
LIPIDS
COMMON COMPONENTS; Carbon, Hydrogen, and Oxygen atoms as well as phosphorus, nitrogen, and sulfur.
Steroids;Organic compounds containing 4 rings of carbon atoms. Function= Growth development, homeostasis, and reproduction. Ex; Hydrocortizone
Tryglicerides; Can be saturated or unsaturated. Function= Store unused calories and provide energy. Found in oils, milk, cheese, etc
Phospholipids; molecules with hydrophilic phosphate heads and hydrophobic lipid tails, consisting of two fatty acids. Function= regulate cellular processes.Examples; Lecithin, found in eggs, liver, etc
Saturated and unsaturated fats are both lipids. Saturated fats are solid in room temperature while unsaturated fats are liquid.
FUNCTION; storing energy, forming components of cell membranes
CARBOHYDRATES
COMMON ELEMENT: It contains Carbon hydrogen and water.
BASIC SUB UNIT: Monosaccharides
USE: Carbohydrates are the body's main source of energy.
Starches; Polysaccarides. Ex, Corn
Sugars; Disaccharides. Ex, Sucrose
Fibers;Monosaccharides. Ex,Whole grains
NUCLEIC ACIDS
Common Elements: Carbon, Hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen.
Monomers: nucleotide, phosphate, sugar, nitrogen base, labeled diagram,
Purpose: to have storage and expression of genetic information
