-What stood out to me most about the role of a Scenic Designer was them still having to check in with the director to ensure the director's vision is met. Theatre is a checks and balances system so scenic designers don’t have unlimited power over how a scene will look.
Cyclorama- I didn't know the skies in plays were made of canvas let alone a special type.
I didn't know scene designers had to look at script though it now makes sense because most details for setting and timing of scenes are in the script.
Cailyn Pendry

I think the feeling of turning a simple sketch into a physical set must be a really cool feeling and great to be involved in. (Bridget McLeer)
The role of scenic design is to create a set piece that accurately portrays the directors vision of the play. It is responsible for the overall vibe and setting of the story. I think this role is important because it could provide details about the story that would otherwise be looked over. An example of this is when the boxes were used as props in the bedroom scene of Elsewhere which gave depth to the character and the story. I feel as though good scenic design helps us to understand the location and story better and more accurately. (Zipporah Muse)
BOX SET
Naturalistic setting of a complete room built from flats with only the side nearest the audience (the fourth wall) missing.
BOSS PLATE
Metal plate fixed to the stage floor into which a bolt can be screwed for fixing scenery. (Zipporah Muse)
The scenic designer has to take the director's ideas and concepts and make them reality (Emersynn Mousaw)
The technical director is responsible for making sure the sets are safe and practical for the space that the show is in (Emersynn Mousaw)
The process of set design is analysis, research, sketches, design meeting, rendering or models, then the possibility of more design meetings, and then creating a working drawing.(Ajsa Mehmedovic)
What I found to be interesting about the role of the scenic designer is that it is different from the role of the technical manager. In my eyes I view the relationship of the scenic designer and technical manager is that the scenic designer has the vision and the technical manager does the heavy lifting and creates the magic. (Ajsa Mehmedovic)
Scenic Designer has to understand the Script and the director's vision so as to create a scene accordingly
(Quan Ngoc Trinh)
Scenic Designer has to create a scene such tat, it complements with the actor performance as well. This is to ensure that actor don't fell out of place

Scenic designers play a very important role in any form of production. The setting is what really makes a scene what it is, and without any scenic design included, there is barely a production.
Emily Kowalski
The scenic designer has a big task of matching what's on script and the stage space. For example if the stage is on a slant with the back of the stage elevated, and when this isn't factored in it can ruin the scene for the audience to understand

Scrim- I actually knew this word before class today, so that was interesting to me. The scenic designer has to discuss all design concepts with the director. -Abigail Skellington-Bice
-Script analysis: I knew directors had to analyze the scripts but I didn't know that scenic designers did too.
-Rendering: I didn't know this was another name for a model and I knew scenic designers create sketches but I didn't realize they also make models of the set.
-Laura Cummings
Scrim-strong, coarse fabric, chiefly used for heavy-duty lining or upholstery. I Didn't know the scenic director was so important I thought the director just told them what to do. -Gianna Vario
Stock- a set design guided by the genre of the play. I did not know this word can be used this way.
cyclorama- a canvas used with lighting to create the vision of the sky.
I didn't know that there is so much work for the scenic designer I like the coordination between the director and scenic designer in order to create a production.(Michael Saavedra)
- Design meetings: Meetings where directors and scenic designers discuss ideas regarding the play. In these meetings, they agree on what goes into the play and what doesn't.
- Design Concept: An explanation of the overall vision of scenic design within the play.
- Lily Polcovar-Horn
Scenic designers have a very important role when it comes to the visuals of the production. They must design a space that is both practical and appealing to watch. Different types of theatres call for different use of the space, and the scenic designer must take this into consideration. I enjoyed learning about different aspects of a set, like flats and platforms. Flats are panels, usually used to create walls. Platforms are typically used to create an elevated surface for performance.

Thrust - A stage in which the acting area juts out into the audience.Contrast - In scenery, dissimilarity of forms used to create interest. In lighting, a difference in color, intensity or distribution.
Scenic designer has to keep in mind the directors vision and find how to put it on the actual stage. They also have to keep in mind colors of lights, costumes, and work with everyone to make sure that nothing clashes. (Jacqueline Welch)
Scenic Design has a very important job when it comes to opening up the story visually and having the audience be engaged by how the stage looks. The scenic designs job is to be able to read the whole play and picture the stage in multiple ways which will allow the actors to make the audience feel like they are watching the play through a screen and not having just regular props. Theatre is a very collaborative space and almost all of the people in different roles in the theatre have to keep in mind the directors vision. Therefore the director needs to be able to clearly communicate their vision because if they cannot then the scenic designer may have to do a lot of different sketches and meet with the director many times and I can imagine that would become very frustrating. The scenic design is very important because the set can really make or break a show. The set may only be the physical environment, but if it does not work with the acting or the rest of the directors vision then the whole production can be thrown off. -Delaney Koehl
Backdrop: Decorative backing to setting
Door Flat:A scene item that consists of a working practical door
As a scene designer to be I thought it was interesting how important planning around time constraints is, it was something that I wasn't aware of.
(Grace Barraco)
Backdrop - Decorative backing to a stage setting
Facade - A false frontage for a piece of stage scenery, typically depicting a building
Brian Burrows
The scenic designer has to work with the information that the director has given them and turn it into what the show will look like to the audience and it can create many different types of feelings for the audience depending on what they create.
The scenic designer is also responsible for making sure their design is achievable for the stage space.

I really liked learning about the scenic designer. I didn't realize their job was so important. I didn't even think they had to read the script I thought they just made what the director told them to. Basically, I thought that the Scenic Designer and the Technical Director had the same job.
Scenic Design is crucial to the production of the play because it creates the visual for the play from the directors vision

Scenic designers have to take into account the play when they are creating their scene. The location, the time period, the people and the culture of the setting all have incredibly important roles within the context of the play.
Where the scenic designer can really have their fun is when the script allows them to. If the script calls for a very specific design there isn't much the designer can do but when the concept is entirely up in the air it's all up to them.
The scenic director is in charge of taking what they know from the scenery of the script, pulling it off the page and transforming it onto the real life stage. It is their job to communicate with the director and combine ideas together in order to collaborate. Sofia Gamboa

looking down on it from above. This has caught my attention because it shows the aspect of the audience looking down upon the stage or object. The ground plan view is a type of mechanical drawing that represents the stage or object as if looking down on it from above. This has caught my attention because it shows the aspect of the audience looking down upon the stage or object. Most audiences would look straight across, but we don't usually think about on top or below what we can/can't see. As for the storyboard, it's the design by presenting a series of sketches that show the set changes over the course of the performance. Just by looking at the word "sketch", it reminds me of not just starting to draw or pitching, but drawing put ideas within the theatre department. That's why the definition of storyboard caught my attention. -Dexter Coburn.
