Part 1
Shaw came to the train station so he could do
penance
Penance means that a vampire abstains from drinking blood for a full month. It is done so the vampire can reflect on his/her deeds and review their past
blood quenchings
. It is also done so that the vampire can be self-disciplined and be reminded of his/her frailty and dependence. The blood fasting also heightens the vampire's compassion. "Only those who have been hungry can know what hunger means"
Blood quenchings are special rituals in which someone close to the vampire is willing to give their blood so that the vampire can be strengthened and be brought closer to his/her true nature. They are an acknowledgement that living beings take what they need in order to survive. This, combined with doing penance, brings them closer to truth and closer to
transcending
their nature later in life
He was supposed to meet his daughter, Holly, who was going to witness his penance (or its final stages) and bring him a new adherent to the faith so that the new adherent can offer their blood for a quenching
Vampires in this world can survive in the sun, but they the sun does affect them. Their skin easily becomes burnt if they are starved for blood. They have made this part of their penance
Thomas and Edith kidnap Shaw
Shaw feels pity for Thomas and Edith. He is lucky to have a daughter yet they cannot have children
Shaw gets increasingly hungry for blood. He considers many times grabbing Thomas or Edith and taking their blood, though he knows that is sacrilege to his kind. Blood givers must be willing, and it must be at proper times
Thomas and Edith came to Nebraska thinking they would find good land to farm
They followed the
preacher
because he promised to help them spiritually
The preacher is a
circuit rider
. Circuit riders travel into homes, meetinghouses, and churches all over the country, attending to people's spiritual needs
He wants to round up all the vampires. He believes that if there are still vampires in the world then Christ will not return. "The Second Coming of Christ would occur after mankind had reformed the entire earth"
He employs the "drunken men" who keep watch over Thomas and Edith's homestead. They grab Shaw and torment him with whiskey when he tries to escape
This changes Shaw because it reminds him of the past trauma of being tortured for what he is
The lead drunken man is the preacher's brother
The preacher lost someone (wife? sister? father?)
The preacher's father burned him on the arm. An indian tribe raided the family's land and killed his father. He was glad to witness it happen.
They believe that if they catch vampires for him and help the vampires then the presence of a vampire will help them gain back their fertility. They desperately want to have children so that they can succeed with their homestead farm
