        World War 1 became known as total war. This is when countries resources were devoted to the war effort.
      - Britain, Germany, Austria, Russia, and France were all dedicated to winning.
      - Each government took control of the economy. Dictating what factories produced and how much to make.
        
        Why did the wartime governments take control of their countries economies? They took control of their economies to try and provide a balance. This balance was to provide for the war and the people. New techniques were made to help all around the country, even if the people didn't see them that way
      - Many factories became military factories. Putting everyone available to work making weapons. Decreasing unemployment in Europe countires.
      - How did total war lead to rationing? Many goods were in low supply causing the government turn to rationing. This was to stay balanced between the troops and people.
        
        The system of rationing ment people could only buy small amounts of certain items that were needed for the war.
        
        Rationing would eventually lead to a range of goods from butter to shoe leather.

        The fear was people would turn against the war if they knew the truth. Using propaganda to keep peoples support of the war.

      - The Zimmermann note simply proved to be the last straw. A large part of the American population already favored the Allies. In particular, America felt a bond with England. The two nations shared a common ancestry and language, as well as similar democratic institutions and legal systems. More important, America’s economic ties with the Allies were far stronger than those with the Central Powers. On April 2, 1917, President Wilson asked Congress to declare war so that the United States could enter World War I. This excerpt from his speech gives some of his reasons.
