Chasitty Morales p.6 Muscular System
Major functions of the muscular system:
Mobility. The muscular system's main function is to allow movement.
Stability. Muscle tendons stretch over joints and contribute to joint stability.
Posture.
Circulation.
Respiration.
Digestion.
Neuromuscular junction: is a highly specialized synapse between a motor neuron nerve terminal and its muscle fiber that are responsible for converting electrical impulses generated by the motor neuron into electrical activity in the muscle fibers.
Muscle coverings:Each muscle is surrounded by a connective tissue sheath called the epimysium. Fascia, connective tissue outside the epimysium, surrounds and separates the muscles.
Sarcomere:A sarcomere is the basic contractile unit of muscle fiber. Each sarcomere is composed of two main protein filaments
Sliding filament theory of muscle contraction:The sliding filament theory explains the mechanism of muscle contraction based on muscle proteins that slide past each other to generate movement.
Names of all the skeletal muscles (including the facial muscles)
Occipitofrontalis muscle.
Temporoparietalis muscle.
Procerus muscle.
Nasalis muscle.
Depressor septi nasi muscle.
Orbicularis oculi muscle.
Corrugator supercilii muscle.
Depressor supercilii muscle.
Action potential in a muscle fiber:An action potential is a special type of electrical signal that can travel along a cell membrane as a wave
3 types of muscles & their functions:
Skeletal muscle – the specialised tissue that is attached to bones and allows movement.
Smooth muscle – located in various internal structures including the digestive tract, uterus and blood vessels such as arteries.
Cardiac muscle – the muscle specific to the heart.
