Heat Treatment of Metals
(Heating & Cooling metals to change their properties)
Work Hardening
Deforming / Hitting - Changes the molecular structure
Increases Strength
However makes it more brittle
Annealing
Heating metal up after hardening to make it soft again - less brittle
Easier to work with
e.g. Jewellery
Case Hardening
Carbon added to the outside case of steel
1) Heat Steel - Red Hot
2) Dip in compound (carbon)
3) Heat again then quench in cold water
Tempering
1) Heat metal
2) Quench in Oil
Makes it less brittle
