SWK 292 S9 Treatment group: Specialised methods, focuses on member's…
-
- focuses on member's cognition and affect
- Assesses member's biopsychosocial development that might have contributed to member's dysfunctional or irrational belief system
- Relating to relationship or communication between people
- Member need to develop skills in relation to others
Learning by observing model
- worker can act as model in enabling member to solve their own interpersonal problems
- attention is always selective and greatly facilitated by focusing on what's observed
The model Modelled behaviour -> Attention of the observer _> Retention of the observer -> Performance abilities of the observer -> Motivation for performing the observed behaviour -> Behaviour actually performed by observed
- Assessed when member lack material, resources to relieve a problem or when environment is impeding member ability to accomplish a goal.
- Connecting members to resources Before doing so, worker will have to identify members need, ability and motivation to follow through. If client is well functioning and motivated, worker just have to act as a broker to give member info on what to expect when attaining the resource. if client not functioning well, more steps need to be taken to ensure resource reach them like contacting family member
- Expanding member's social network esp for isolated members
- Contigency management procedures in order for member to maintain their success between group sessions. important to modify and change the reward or punishment they receive. Contingency should specify the type of behaviour to be perform, who will perform and how behaviour will be reinforced
Modiying physical environmentEnvironment can make things less or more difficult for member to accomplish treatment goals. Worker should modify physical environment so that it promotes goal achievement and gives members opportunity to practice skills learned in group
(1) Help member accurately identify behaviours, thoughts and feelings causing the behaviour
(2) Discriminate thoughts from feelings, member can go around group to ask other member how they perceive they are feeling
- use a logbook/journal to record situation. recording thoughts, belief and behavioural and emotional consequences, allowing identification of thoughts , allowing members to be aware as it occur
- To recognise the associations between thoughts, feelings and behaviour.
- Awareness can be reach with self-monitoring process, monitoring feelings, thoughts and behaviours
- Analyse the thoughts and beliefs that maintain or worsen dysfunctional thoughts and beliefs, turning them into a pattern
- 3 types of faulty thinking pattern and cognitive distortion that members does
- 1 faulty inference to observed behaviour
- 2 attributing responsibility or control to wrong source
- 3 evaluating the inference & sources to terrible consequences
Egs of some cognitive distortions
- Overgeneralising an event
- Selectively focus on portions of an event
- Taking too much responsibility for suitations out of their control
- Help member change irrational/ distorted thoughts, beliefs and associated feeling states. There are a few techniques:
- Cognitive restructuring Changing belief system. Correcting members cognitive distortion and deprecating self talk, exposing faulty logic in thought pattern and replace them with rational thought process
- Cognitive self instruction Using internal dialogue and covert self-statement for solving problems
- Thought stopping Some may have difficulty in stopping maladaptive/ self defeating thoughts, so it involves client thinking of this thought and then being told to stop by worker repeatedly.
- Reframing Cognitive technique to help member see the same situation in different light
- Visualisation and cognitive imagery techniques
- Deep breathing
- Progressive mucle relaxation
- Systematic desenitisation
- Worker should change frequency, duration, distribution or content of the communication & interaction pattern occurring in the treatment group. So that all members have opportunity to speak,
- Worker should intervene when topics discussed is not relevant, very negative and often causes members to feel 'put down'
by (1) Challenging commonly accepted beliefs and ideas helf by members or (2) Pointing out dominant feature that appear to be taboo, (3) To develop a contingency contract with members
- It's built from warm, caring and empathic group environment. Worker can do by listening to members, validating their experiences, affirming their attempts to cope with situation that is confronting & encourage members to tune in into each other's needs and to be supportive to one another.
- Having a smaller room allow members to feel closer together = more cohesive.
- To address members' concern for getting too close with each other which could step from their ability to form close intimate relationships
- Promoted through norms, roles and status hierarchies. group dynamics can be viewed as social controls and method for enhancing group member and cohesion of group as a whole
- Worker need to have a thorough understanding of their organisation. this includes the history, & the purpose of wanting to increase support.
- Agency often wishes to get the most out of their resources by serving as many clients as possible with as little cost as possible
- Worker should be aware of the organisational factor that help to predict the degree of resistant that may be expected. This includes: extent of the proposed change, the value orientation and decision making style of administrator on deciding whether to accept proposal
- Resistant may be due to the administrator concern about saving money or when the proposed changes reverse or negate program services received in the past
- Establishing links between agencies members
- Benefits of interagency links: (1) When other agencies are aware of the type of group service offered, they may refer client for treatment. (2) May identify the need for particular services. (3)Avoid duplication of services
- Group work service depend on the support of the local community residents
- Resident's awareness of the social problem that exist in their communities & belief of the group work service can maintain adequate social functioning alleviating social problems that are essential
